even more Tips & Tricks

Tips & Tricks emailed to our Yr9 students.

WiFi Connection @ School
You would have noticed WiFi access points fixed to the ceilings of ’some’ rooms in; Library, H, J and D block. We have received info. that WiFi access points will be extended to every roomin our school … SOON???
WiFi access points SPILL out into adjacent spaces, including outside & inside study/work areas.
* currently access to the Internet, by DERNSW Netbooks may be limited or not available if you are not near an access point.

The ’stair’ icon @ the bottom right of your screen will tell you your current WiFi access.
**** CHECK that WiFi is TURNED ON- on the front left edge of the Netbook you MUST see 2 blue lights. The blue light on the right indicates that WiFi is ‘on’. If not press the green network button , to the right of the power button!
•hover your cursor over the ’stair’ icon fir more info.
• A red cross through the ’stairs’ means NO access.
To attempt reconnection

•double click the red cross/stair icon
•close the Netbook lid, wait, then relog in
•shutdown, then restart
*** you MUST be in range of an access point to connect
*** you DO NOT need WiFi to continue working with applcations eg. Microsoft OneNote etc.

We are always looking to you to feed back your Tips & Tricks so that they can be shared with others.

DER Netbooks in MAT (Aquaculture)

After a ‘difficult’ year with some challenging students in Stage 5
MAT (Marine & Aquaculture Technology)

Background:
I posted photos and research questions to our wadalbaarc.blogspot.com
BLOG while on holiday in Europe (Recently)

We have built on this resource over a number of years and recently interacted with a SMARTNotebook file
in our Vid.Con Connected Classroom and discussed travel OS & currency etc.

Yesterdays lesson built on previous lesson etc.
Overview:
•Use the BLOG postings of the fish markets in La Spezia- Italy…
wadalbaarc.blogspot.com
•Determine the ‘common name’ of the species by comparing the BLOG photo/s to
previous lessons on Australia Fish Species Common Names and identifying and taste testing
•Note the price per kg (in €) from the photos
•Use Google Search to find a Currency Converter from Euro to AU$s
•Create an Excel spreadsheet & ‘label’, enter info from photos AND
create a formula to convert Euros € to AU$s
•test the formula, shared from one member of the class, Format the
‘cell’ to ‘currency’, ‘fill down’ the formula to automatically
calculate the AU$ equivalent for a range of display fish species
- some kids then used the ’snipping’ tool to bring their Excel info
into OneNote!!!
The skills etc. in this lesson MUST be transferable to other courses,
topics, lessons & life!

Almost totally on task, lot’s of relevant questions, NO behaviour
issues… FUN, FUN, FUN!
• did you know that:
-our current exchange rate is strong(er) against the € @ .62xxx
-1kg of pilchard was 4€ which is equivalent to AU$6
- I cooked fresh mussels in La Spezia

More… DER Aquaculture!

Today, 2 days after previous lesson… still good?????

Today we focused on:

- completion of the Excel sheet
- inserting columns & rows
- graphing the results- which graph will best represent the data?
- snipping or copy->paste into Microsoft OneNote
- including photos in the Excel sheet
- emailing the completed project

Things that happened today:

- some off task, mainly due to skills issues…BUT students ’sort’ assistance and progressed with help
- 2 permanently off task… tried
- Bluetooth sharing of netty work within the room between students

Tips & Tricks:
… from students- they have the time to experiment with special key strokes etc. and share with everyone
Difficulties:
- Yr10 and Yr9 in Stage 5 class- Yr9 have Yr10 have not

Lots of temptations, but all good TODAY???

DER Veronicas- Revolution

THE VERONICAS- “Revolution”

I am temperamental
Like a heart without a home
I am sentimental
But you don’t know me at all

I have expectations
I wanna be the one you call
And I want a conversation
But you don’t know me at all

Hold on tight
I am
I’m a revolution
Close your eyes
I am, I am
I’ll blow your mind
I am
I’m a revolution
Why do I have to explain
Who I am again and again
I am

I know what you’re thinking
I can tell what you’re waiting for
But I think that you’re pretending
But you don’t fool me at all

If you knew me at all
You’d take my picture
And you’d hang it on your wall

Hold on tight
I am
I’m a revolution
Close your eyes
I am, I am
I’ll blow your mind
I am
I’m a revolution
Why do I have to explain
Who I am again and again

I didn’t know that you’ve been wanting me
Oh how’s a girl supposed to know
Just when you think that it’s all tragedy
Don’t worry baby I’ll go slow

Hold on tight
I am
I’m a revolution
Close your eyes
I am, I am
I’ll blow your mind
I am
I’m a revolution
Why do I have to explain
(Why do I have to explain)
Who I am again and again

Hold on tight
I am
I’m a revolution
Close your eyes
I am, I am
I’ll blow your mind
I am
I’m a revolution
Why do I have to explain
Who I am again and again
I am

DER Tracy Chapman – Talkin’ Bout A Revolution

Tracy Chapman – Talkin’ Bout A Revolution

Don’t you know you’re talking about a revolution
It sounds like a whisper
Don’t you know they’re talking about a revolution
It sounds like a whisper

While they’re standing in the welfare lines
Crying at the doorsteps of those armies of salvation
Wasting time in unemployment lines
Sitting around waiting for a promotion

Don’t you know you’re talking about a revolution
It sounds like a whisper

Poor people are gonna rise up
And get their share
Poor people are gonna rise up
And take what’s theirs

Don’t you know you better run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run
Oh I said you better run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run

Finally the tables are starting to turn
Talking about a revolution
Finally the tables are starting to turn
Talking about a revolution oh no
Talking about a revolution oh no

While they’re standing in the welfare lines
Crying at the doorsteps of those armies of salvation
Wasting time in unemployment lines
Sitting around waiting for a promotion

Don’t you know you’re talking about a revolution
It sounds like a whisper

And finally the tables are starting to turn
Talking about a revolution
Finally the tables are starting to turn
Talking about a revolution oh no
Talking about a revolution oh no
Talking about a revolution oh no

DER- ‘Revolution’

The Beatles – Revolution

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it’s evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don’t you know that you can count me out
Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right
all right, all right

You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We’d all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well, you know
We’re doing what we can
But when you want money
for people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right
all right, all right
Ah

ah, ah, ah, ah, ah…

You say you’ll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it’s the institution
Well, you know
You better free you mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao
You ain’t going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right
all right, all right
all right, all right, all right
all right, all right, all right

Setting up the DER Netbook for use with a SMARTBoard

To allow users to write into Word, Powerpoint, etc  on a SMART Board connected to a DER netbook (this function is called Ink Aware), users must turn on the SMART Board tools. The following procedure should be followed:

1. Access the START menu and then All Programs

2. Choose SMART Technologies in the list, followed by SMART Board Drivers

3. Select SMART Board Tools

This will activate The Floating Tools toolbar and will add the SMART icon to the Hidden Icons menu on the Taskbar. From here the Floating Tools can be turned off (hidden) if they are not  required.

If further information is required on the function of Ink Aware, a Google search for ’smart board ink aware’ will yield plenty of results.
